Combating illegal fishing with advanced satellite monitoring systems
Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing is a global challenge that threatens marine ecosystems, food security and the livelihoods of coastal communities. Vietnam has been at the center of international attention since the European Commission issued a “yellow card” warning in 2017.
Satellite-based monitoring systems provide unprecedented capabilities for detecting and deterring IUU fishing. Key technologies include: Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for vessel detection, Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking, Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data and optical satellite imagery for port monitoring.
By integrating these data sources, authorities can identify vessels that turn off their transponders, detect suspicious behavior patterns and monitor fishing activities in protected areas.
Vietnam has made significant strides in combating IUU fishing, including: mandatory installation of VMS on all fishing vessels over 15 meters, establishment of a national fisheries surveillance force and implementation of stricter port controls.
Green Environment provides integrated IUU monitoring solutions combining satellite data, AIS/VMS integration, AI-powered anomaly detection and real-time dashboards for fisheries authorities.
